一、機構認可（相當於大學校務評鑑）團體

　　機構認可係以大學之整體校務為評鑑對象。由九個區域性及六個全國性的認可團體負責。九個區域性團體中，有三個是區域性之職業技術學院的特殊認可團體，其餘的六個區域性認可團體皆負責大學校院與中小學的校務評鑑與認可工作。此六個區域性認可團體皆根據其所在地而命名，包括：

1. 新英格蘭區各州校院認可學會
   （New England Association of Colleges and Schools, NEA）
2. 中部各州校院認可學會
   （Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, MSA）
3. 中北部各州校院認可學會
   （North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, NCA）
4. 南部各州校院認可學會
   （Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, SACS）
5. 西北部各州校院認可學會
   （Northwest Association of Colleges and Schools, NACS）
6. 西部各州校院認可學會
   （Western Association of School and Colleges, WASC）

二、專門領域認可（相當於學門評鑑）團體

　　專業性專門領域認可係針對校內特定學院、系所、學程或專門領域進行評鑑與認可，分別由四十七個相關專業性學術團體來辦理：
